Fort Wars (Age of Empires 3) / Fort Wars 5.0 for AOE3 Definitive Edition
« on: January 27, 2022, 08:49:01 PM »
I've taken some time to revive Fort Wars, so it now works on the Definitive Edition.  This also marks the 16th year since the first official release on January 28, 2006 and is a nice anniversary/send-off for the map.  Thanks everyone for their support over the years.  This (and the original Norse Wars game) made up a significant part of my childhood growing up, and there have been many good memories.

Download Fort Wars 5.0 for AOE3 DE below (or by going to Tools > Mods ingame):
https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/50510

We'll be having a kick-off event Saturday Jan.29 2022 2:00PM PST on live-stream to get everyone playing again and will hopefully make that a regular occurrence. Check back here and follow @NorseWars on Twitter for updates.  I'll probably be hosting games and hanging around online even before then, so feel free to add me.  It helps that AOE3 is old enough now that it is cheap (only $7) to download and install - if only just to play Fort Wars. :P The ladder doesn't work on AOE3 DE yet, so DE can be treated as unranked while formal ranked matches can be played on the older Fort Wars 4.1 for AOE3 (2007)/Complete on Steam (yes it still works!).

Lastly, I will also be working on turning this into a standalone game starting this year, so be on the lookout for that too.  Feel free to follow the progress via @NorseWars on Twitter, and I welcome all the help I can get to get that off the ground.

Generally speaking, if anyone can do 2D illustrations or has someone they know they can recommend, let me know - we'll want to redo the logo and banner for one so it's not owned by Microsoft.

On a separate note - if someone has experience creating SMF forum themes, let me know, and I can pay to have it done.  Would be interested to get the forum + site maybe looking like it did originally at its peak:

Thanks - but at this point I'm more interested in trying to build it into a standalone game.  Constantly updating the mod to keep up with every patch or expansion that might get released is just not sustainable.

I'm starting to transition to working on this.  I'll start by hiring out bits and pieces to get foundation going.  Does anyone have recommendations for the following?
- 2D artist for concept art / illustrations
- RTS engine work or transforming the UE4 engine for that.  Current UE4 isn't meant for high unit count or pvp networking.
- 3D modeler for units with AOE/AOM aesthetic.

Does the old map not work anymore? Doesn't seem like they did anything new

with DE.

Currently cutting my teeth with a VR arena game - was a good refresher for how to make a ladder from scratch which will no doubt look familiar. :P

Think I probably want to see the main title font with sharp edges/corners

anyway to call back to the original AOM fonts.

Last I recall, every unit stuttered when trying to move and I gave up trying to record a demo (just look at how laggy the video I have on YouTube for it is).  Is that still the case?

Btw reply-by-email wasn't working for a while, sorry just fixed it.  If you replied anything by email (there was a lot of us on this thread), please resend.  Thanks!

Nice - it looks pretty legit.  Where did you get the images? Only thing I

might change is the header font (the thick text for Norse Wars and few

other headers) - everything else looks epic but that font looks like Clash

of Clans or something lol

Thanks good to hear from some of you. I'll post things here as I start later in the year.  I have some things I started a few years ago when I was attempting to outsource the game, but that didn't go anywhere (hence why I'm looking at doing it myself now).

Here's some temporary stuff if you're curious.  If anyone wants to help with website/art/etc, feel free.

Almost forgot but I actually composed a remix of the Norse song at the beginning of the game as well:

Not sure how many of you are around, but I've spent enough of the past couple years doing UE4 stuff that I feel comfortable making a game from scratch now if there's enough interest to collaborate on a Norse Wars remake.  To do Norse Wars justice, it's going to be a lot of work, so I don't think I'd want to tackle this solo.  But I've done enough now that I can personally do most everything including the multiplayer networking.  Not something I'm planning to tackle in the immediate term, but just putting feelers out there to see what kind of interest + help I could get later in the year.

I'm playing on and off.. but it seems like people are scattered on different servers now.  Yeah it's pretty cool seeing so many old names back. :D
